As part of our mission to serve as a community hub for music lovers, we strive to keep the store lively with special events and live performances throughout the year. Below are just a few annual highlights that we always look forward to.
Record Store Day
Val’s halla is proud to be an official Record Store Day participating store.
Since 2008, Record Store Day has grown into the world’s largest single-day music event, shining a light on the culture of the indie record store across the globe. In 2020, that world is different, so Record Store Day will be too. RSD is now scheduled to be celebrated with special, properly distanced release dates on Saturdays in August, September and October.
Record Store Day will look very different this year, but supporting indie record stores may be more important than ever. We don’t know what sort of rules will be in place, or what sort of gatherings people will be in the mood for this year, so we’re focusing on the music and getting the really great titles on the RSD Official List this year into the stores and into your hands, in the most financially and socially responsible way.
The titles on the RSD 2020 Official List, launched on March 5th, will be released at participating record stores on one of these three RSD Drops: August 29th, September 26th, and October 24th. The new version of The List, with newly assigned RSD Drops dates will launch on June 1 so check back here for a look at when you’ll be able to pick up the titles on your RSD 2020 wishlist at your local record store.
What’s Blooming on Harrison
As a proud member of the Oak Park Arts District, Val’s halla participates in many special events throughout the year. The biggest of these is the “What’s Blooming on Harrison” festival, held on a Saturday each May.
You can count on Val’s to play an active role in keeping the event filled with music. Be sure to stop by our booth outside or visit the store for special deals and rare finds.
Due to COVID-19, What’s Blooming has been canceled this year.
halla-Palooza is a 2-day in-store event started by Val to celebrate the store’s anniversary each year. It takes place on the last full weekend of July and the store offers an exciting lineup of live music and other festivities.
Our status as a registered member of Record Store Day means April is not the only day we get exclusive releases. Black Friday shoppers can come to Val’s for limited-release records that are available exclusively on that day through participating Record Store Day shops.
If you can’t make it in on Black Friday, never fear. We keep the party going all weekend long with special deals and live music. Small business Saturday is also a great day to come support our store!
